TOP ROW: Sew a 2" black square to a 2" background square. Press to the black. Referring to the block picture above, for placement, sew the 2" X 3½" background rectangle to one side of the black and background unit. Press to the rectangle. Sew this pieced unit to a 3½" dark blue square. Press to the blue piece. Sew a 3½" background square to the opposite side of the blue square. Press to the blue piece. Set row one aside.
CENTER ROW: Draw a diagonal line on the back of the remaining four 2" background squares. Place a marked 2" background square, right sides together, with a 2" X 3½" dark blue rectangle. See diagram A below. Sew on the diagonal line. Cut ¼" from the sewn line, cutting the corner off. Press out, away from the center. See diagram B. Place a marked 2" background square, right sides together, on the opposite side of the unit from diagram B. See diagram C. Sew on the line. Cut ¼" from the sewn line, cutting the corner off. Press out, away from the center. See diagram D. These units are called flying geese. Sew a 2" X 3½" dark blue rectangle to a flying geese unit. See diagram E. Press to the blue rectangle. Repeat one more time. Set one unit aside for bottom row.

With right sides together sew a 2" light blue square to a 2" black square. Press to the black. Repeat one more time. Referring to the diagram below and matching opposing seams sew these two units together to create a four patch.

Referring to the butterfly block picture sew a flying geese unit to the four patch and a 3½" dark blue square to the opposite side of the four patch. Press to the dark blue fabric.
BOTTOM ROW: Referring to the butterfly block picture sew a 3½" square background piece to each side of the left over flying geese unit. Press toward the center unit.
FINISHING THE BLOCK: Pin and sew rows together matching opposing seams where possible. Press seams to one side.
Have fun sewing these blocks in different colors from your scraps.
Make three blocks joined together with a sashing. Add borders and you have a table runner.
Another idea, one block bordered makes a great pillow.
